What are the Benefits of Respite Care?

Sandra Alvarez • July 8, 2024

What is Respite Care? Respite — or temporary breaks from providing care at home — requires having someone else look after your loved ones while you are away. Respite care is necessary, it gives caregivers time to take care of their own needs and health. If caregivers ignore their own needs, they are at risk of developing their own health problems or burning out and being unable to care for their loved ones.

Being able to go on vacation, spend time with other family members, care for your own children, and nurture your own mental and physical health are all necessities that everybody needs and deserves. Nowadays, most people growing older prefer to be cared for in the comfort of their own home. However, those who receive assistance at home almost always require unpaid family caregivers.

Caring for a family member can be rewarding, but it can also be very demanding both mentally and physically. There are many physical signs that show you may need to take a break from caregiving and consider a respite caregiver. These physical signs include body aches, headaches, insomnia, weight gain or loss, and becoming dependent on alcohol, drugs, or prescription medication. There are also emotional signs including becoming easily bothered, feelings of sadness, withdrawing from friends and family, and a disinterest in hobbies. Being a caregiver can be demanding and all-consuming. Consider respite care to allow you to regain your sense of self and take time to take care of yourself.
